Hygiene

What would you expect during your dental hygiene visit?

During your routine dental hygiene visit, we would clean your teeth above and below the gum-line with ultrasonic scaling tools and hand scalers, to remove plaque and calculus deposits on the teeth surfaces. Polish paste would be applied towards the end of your visit to remove teeth surface stains in most of patients. In normal condition, no anesthesia would be applied during your routine dental hygiene visit, so you could eat normally after your visit. Sometimes, fluoride treatment would be part of your dental hygiene visit, especially for children who have high risk of getting cavities. If topical fluoride had been applied, you would be noticed not to eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after your dental visit.

In addition to routine dental hygiene procedure, comprehensive or periodic dental exam accompanied with dental x-rays would be included in your routine dental visit.

How often should you have a dental hygiene visit?

Most patients would benefit for a dental hygiene visit every 6 months. However, the frequency can depend on many factors. If you are more susceptible to plaque and calculus accumulation, or if you have history or signs of periodontal diseases, you might want to have dental hygiene or periodontal maintenance services every 3 - 4 months.
